Lalibela: Ethiopia's Spiritual Heart
Lalibela, formerly known as Roha, is a town in northern Ethiopia famous for its rock-hewn monolithic churches. King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty commissioned these extraordinary structures in the 12th century with the vision of creating a "New Jerusalem" for Christians who could not make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land due to Muslim conquests.
The churches are carved directly into the volcanic rock beneath the ground, creating a complex of 11 medieval churches that remain active places of worship today. This UNESCO World Heritage site is considered one of the world's most incredible architectural achievements and is a major pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.

The Lalibela churches are divided into two main groups, representing earthly Jerusalem and heavenly Jerusalem. They are connected by a series of tunnels and passages, with the most famous being Bet Giyorgis (Church of St. George), carved in the shape of a cross.

Festivals of Lalibela
Lalibela comes alive during religious festivals, when thousands of pilgrims flock to the town to celebrate. The most significant festivals are Christmas (Ledet/Genna) and Ashendye (Ashenda/Shadey), which offer unique cultural experiences for visitors.
Christmas in Lalibela (Ledet/Genna)
Christmas in Lalibela, known as Ledet or Genna, is one of the most spectacular religious celebrations in Ethiopia. Celebrated on January 7th (according to the Ethiopian calendar), it attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country who journey to Lalibela for this sacred occasion.
The celebrations begin on Christmas Eve with an all-night vigil in and around the rock-hewn churches. Pilgrims dressed in white traditional clothing gather, chanting prayers and hymns. The atmosphere is mystical, with the glow of candles illuminating the ancient stone churches against the night sky.
At dawn on Christmas Day, the Patriarch conducts mass in Bet Maryam (Church of St. Mary), which is broadcast nationally. Following the service, pilgrims participate in traditional games, most notably a hockey-like game called "Genna" played with curved sticks and a wooden ball, from which the festival gets its name.
Key Experiences for Visitors:
- Witness the spectacular all-night vigil on Christmas Eve
- Attend the Christmas morning mass at Bet Maryam

Ashendye/Ashenda/Shadey Festival
Ashendye (also known as Ashenda or Shadey in different regions) is a unique cultural festival celebrated primarily by women and girls in northern Ethiopia, especially in Lalibela and the Tigray region. The festival marks the end of a two-week fasting period (Filseta) commemorating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
During Ashendye, girls and young women dress in traditional white dresses with colorful embroidery and adorn themselves with jewelry. They gather in groups, singing special Ashendye songs while dancing through the streets, visiting neighbors, and collecting gifts. The festival lasts for several days and creates a joyful, vibrant atmosphere throughout Lalibela.
The name "Ashenda" comes from the tall grass that girls traditionally wear around their waists during the celebrations. In Lalibela, the festival has special significance as it combines religious devotion with cultural expression, celebrating both feminine spirituality and community bonds.
Key Experiences for Visitors:
- Watch colorful processions of singing and dancing women through Lalibela's streets
- Listen to traditional Ashendye songs with their distinctive rhythms and lyrics
- See the beautiful traditional clothing and jewelry worn during the festival

Cultural Significance
Ashendye is more than just a festival; it's an important cultural institution that empowers young women, preserves traditional music and dance, and strengthens community bonds. It provides a rare public platform for female expression in a traditionally patriarchal society.
